Abstract: | The collection of essays in this book is the outcome of a symposium held at Cornell University in March 2008 in honour of Professor Ali A. Mazrui's contribution to scholarship and in celebration of his 75th birthday. A related goal was to assess what has come to be known as Mazruiana. Mazrui's life and work are used as a guide towards explaining the historical impact of black public intellectuals such as Julius K. Nyerere, Patrice Lumumba and Barrack Obama. The book expplores not only politics and academics, but also religion, gender, class and civil-military relations. The essays are arranged thematically: 1. Introductory essay: growing up in a shrinking world; from a Kenyan childhood to the Cuban missile crisis (Ali A. Mazrui); 2. Dialogue of cultures (essays by Thomas Uthup, Etin Anwar, Alamin M. Mazrui, and Seifudein Adem); 3. Conflict and postcoloniality (essays by A.B. Assensoh and Yvette Marie Alex-Assensoh, Jayantha Jayman, William P. Mayaka, Lindah Mhando, and Ali A. Mazrui); 4. Afro-optimism in thought and policy (essays by N'Dri T. Assie-Lumumba and Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo, Ali A. Mazrui, and Ahmed Mohiddin); 5. The rise of Obama and the politics of identity (essays by Ali A. Mazrui, Amadu Jacky Kaba, Abdul Samed Bemath, and Seifudein Adem). An appendix contains a tribute to Ali Mazrui by Mahmood Mamdani.
