Abstract:This issue of 'African Analyst Quarterly' takes a look at the opportunities, drivers and impediments influencing sub-Saharan Africa's ability to meet its sustainable development objectives and the impact of the mining sector on these objectives. Harry G. Broadman explains the reasons behind sub-Saharan Africa's surprising - and largely unnoticed - resilience in the face of the world financial crisis. Stephen Lande and Karna Cohen examine the benefits inherent in the formation of viable regional blocs and address WTO impediments standing in the way. Gary McMahon and Peter van der Veen discuss the role of the mining industry in sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. A compendium of NGOs assert that African governments are foregoing millions of dollars in revenue through mining tax subsidies and company tax avoidance strategies. According to US venture capital veteran, Alan Patricof, Africa suffers from a serious lack of equity risk capital needed to foster entrepreneurship. Michael Morris argues that the informal sector presents the greatest source of entrepreneurial activity on the continent. Finally, Anita Spring paints a picture of Africa's complex entrepreneurial landscape. A directory of African mining companies concludes the issue. [ASC Leiden abstract]
