| Abstract: | The chapters in this book are updated contributions to an international conference 'The changing politics of land: domestic policies, crisis management, and regional norms', held in Pretoria in November 2005. The book analyses the role of land as a place and source of conflict, especially with regard to policy development, crisis management and post-war/post-conflict reconstruction in Africa. It covers land issues in Kenya (Claire Médard), Rwanda (Chris Huggins), South Africa (Ben Cousins, Catherine E. Laurent, Ruth Hall), northern Cameroon (Bernard Gonné), Namibia (Renaud Lapeyre, Willem Adriaan Odendaal), Mozambique (Christopher Tanner), Angola (Jenny Clover), Democratic Republic of Congo (Thierry Vircoulon), Tanzania (Wakuru Magigi), Zimbabwe (Sam Moyo) and southern Africa (Chris Alden and Ward Anseeuw). The chapters are grouped into thematic sections: 1. Ethnic and indigenous land conflicts; 2. Between 'traditionalism and modernity': insecurity, privatisation and marginalisation; 3. Renewed land interests, land use, and conflicts; 4. State building, politics and land; 5. Land policy development, planning, (non-)inclusiveness; 6. Regional scopes of land conflicts and changing norms. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
