Abstract:Since 1994, Somalis have become one of the major groups of African Muslim migrants in Johannesburg, South Africa. This article examines narratives of Somalis' journeys as refugees from Somalia to South Africa in order to understand the multilayered Somali identity in the wider context of immigration into Johannesburg. The article focuses on the critical interrelationships between economic, cultural and religious affiliations in the lives of Somali refugees in Johannesburg. It argues that these Somali migrants are developing strong communal experiences, an explicit ethno-religious identity and resilient ties (of remittances and trade) between the home country and the migrant community.
