Abstract:	This issue of Agenda presents research and writings from those who work at the interface between the law itself, and its impact and consequences upon women, to contribute to the critical work of ensuring gender justice in the day-to-day lives of South Africa's women. It is a collection of writing which provides a wide-ranging critique of the legal system's gender bias against women. Attention is paid to the Traditional Courts Bill; rape; the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120 (1998); polygamy; the impact of 'hlonipha' (the custom of respect) on rural Zulu women; access to maternity benefits; domestic violence in Nigeria; 'Kitcha' customary law in Ethiopia; health policies in a female prison in Durban; two sex workers' stories.
