Abstract:In this book, the author has assembled hundreds of proverbs and sayings on women, in almost eighty languages from all the countries in Africa south of the Sahara. They are classified in two categories: phases of life (girl, woman, wife, co-wife, mother, daughter, mother-in-law, widow, grandmother, old woman) and elements of life (beauty, love, sex, pregnancy/childbirth, sterility, work, quarrels, unfaithfulness/unreliability, witchcraft/poisoning, power). The proverbs are presented in as literal a translation as possible. Whenever necessary, a short comment has been added. The language and country the proverb comes from have also been added. The introduction discusses the role of proverbs in society and their characteristics.
