| Abstract: | The First National HIV/AIDS/STI and Other Related Infectious Disease Research Conference, held in Gaborone in December 2003, was instigated after it was acknowledged that research is the key to developing appropriate and effective interventions in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The conference was also used as a framework for streamlining national research priorities and dissemination modalities in line with Botswana's National Strategic Framework for HIV/AIDS, 2003-2009. Areas where more research is needed in order to understand the social dynamics of HIV/AIDS in Botswana include behaviour change communication and community responses; gender and reproductive health; sexuality, research competence and institutional capacity; HIV/AIDS management; treatment, care and support; HIV/AIDS policy environment; impact at individual, family and household level; and leadership capacity.
