Abstract:This special issue focuses on the evolution of student activism in Africa, notably since the involvement of the World Bank in the restructuring of higher education in the late 1970s. In their introduction, 'Student activism, structural adjustment and the democratic transition in Africa', the editors Leo Zeilig and Marcelle Dawson survey the role of African students, the nature of their protest and their relationship with civil society in the processes that brought about a wave of multiparty elections and democratic struggles in Africa.
