Abstract:Mafrouza was a poor quarter in the Egyptian metropolis of Alexandria. It was built on the ruins of an ancient Greek-roman necropolis. Ten million people lived there before it was demolished in 2007. The filmmaker spent a total of two years between 2001 and 2004 in Mafrouza and observed the everyday life of several inhabitants. This is the first episode of what was to become a 5-part film. A first visit to Mafrouza, of an archaeological nature and mainly showing interest in ancient graves, shows the first entering in the neighborhood. Then a wedding celebration full of joy, vitality and music hurls the viewer to the present-day quarter of the city. We become acquainted with several persons and their difficult daily life: an old man bailing water out of his flooded house; a woman baking bread outdoors in the wintry rain; a Muslim garbage collecting family seeking protection from St. George; a young couple talking about their relationship and love with astounding openness.
