Abstract: | The economy of Malawi requires diversification from agriculture for the country to realize significant development. This would entail full exploitation of Malawi's mineral wealth and exporting mineral products to markets abroad, thereby increasing foreign exchange earnings. There is also a need to exploit minerals for use in Malawi's industry. After an exposé on Malawi's geological setting and mineral resources, this paper shows that, in Malawi, mining is still in the infancy stage of development. It argues that advanced technology to win and process the minerals is required for the efficient production of Malawi's mineral products. The exploitation of mineral deposits requires large capital investment and highly automated technology to make a significant impact on the economic growth of the country. Bibliogr.
