Abstract:There are various schools of thought regarding South Africa's position on the ongoing crisis in the southern African subregion, with a special focus on the Zimbabwe factor. The West is of the view that Pretoria should take a radical position involving sanctions against the Harare government. On the other hand, the 'African school' still believes that the use of quiet diplomacy is the only way out of the political logjam in Zimbabwe. Taking into consideration the contiguity factor, this paper explores the determinants of the relationship between the two States, showing that this relationship is a conglomeration of historical, cultural, proximity and economic factors.
