Abstract: | This paper addresses the importance of wealth differences among Tigre and Hidareb pastoralists in northwest Eritrea. Drawing upon data from a survey held in 2000/2001 and 2003/2004 among 150 households, the paper analyses important economic indicators that have significant effects on production strategies of the pastoral communities. The study argues that livestock are kept as a preferred store of wealth across a wide range of social groups and therefore differentiation of livestock ownership has profound impacts on social stratification and marketing behaviour.
