Abstract: | This paper provides an overview of the traditional music of the Bakalanga, a Bantu-speaking group of northern Botswana and southeastern Zimbabwe, as a window to some of their cultural practices. Bakalanga traditional songs reflect Kalanga culture, customs and spirituality, and indicate Bakalanga interaction with their neighbours. The paper aims at creating awareness about Kalanga music. It considers the different musical genres of the Bakalanga and their purposes - entertainment, rainmaking prayers and healing -, providing examples of songs - collected from various villages in the central and northeastern districts of Botswana - for each genre.
