Abstract: | This book analyses political processes in the Middle East using notions of 'civility'. The first part defines the concepts of 'civility' and 'civil society', and explains how they can be used to understand and explain dynamics of political change. The middle section analyses the implications of different forms of 'civility' in the polities of the region, including case studies from Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde. The third section highlights cross-regional mechanisms in which expressions of 'civility' are mobilised. Contributions by Frédéric Volpi, Armando Salvatore, Salwa Ismail, Ewan Stein, Pedro F. Marcelino, Hermon Farahi, Tim Jacoby, Adham Saouli, Michaelle Browers, Emma C. Murphy and S. Sayyid. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
