Abstract: | This article examines the overt and covert roles community organizations play in the development and management of water resources in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. It is based on empirical data from key respondents from ten selected NGOs and 80 community-based organizations (CBOs) using a 50 percent sample size. Government was the principal provider of both economic and social infrastructure in the area. Community organizations supported four basic infrastructure facilities. The CBOs were especially committed to road and water projects, while the NGOs were more involved in health and educational facilities. They were motivated by the need to address community-felt needs although they were limited by inadequate funds. There is a need for intensified public enlightenment for more participation on the part of community organizations. A synergy between government and community input will make for better development of the LGA. The authors propose water supply infrastructure facilities for Michika LGA and recommend roles for the stakeholders, sources of funds and an implementation strategy. Bibliogr., sum.
