Abstract: | This article investigates the profile of Alhaji Muhammad Sani Muhammad (Alhaji Liman) (1915-1971), trader, businessman, and religious leader, and his role in the economy of the Lake Chad area, northern Nigeria. Alhaji Liman combined a leadership position in business and mysticism at a time when Sufism was regarded by many as complete abstention from worldly affairs. Hailed from Kebbi area, Alhaji Liman's coming to Lake Chad was essentially the result of his unshakable belief in the Niass Tijaniyya and the pressure and persecution directed at him by the then political leaders and traditional rulers in the Sokoto emirate, who were vehemently opposed to the Tijaniyya brotherhood. His arrival in the Lake Chad area with a large number of Niass Tijaniyya followers had the effect of further developing the Lake Chad economy and in particular the fishing industry.
