Abstract:The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (created in 1917 as the Rhodesia Society of Accountants) for nearly 80 years legally enjoyed a virtual monopoly of the appellation 'accountant' and of the practice of auditing; and by its traditional insistence on article service and training it claimed, in effect, a higher standard of practice. This paper presents an explication of the founding of the Institute, which was so troubled that success was often in doubt. Bibliogr., notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract]
