| Abstract: | The very first settlers in what was later to become the Maltahöhe District (in present-day Namibia) ranged from missionaries to farmers, who struggled with drought and wild animals as well as with Bushmen living in the area. Later settlers included transport riders for the German colonial authorities, and German colonial administrators. This paper briefly tells their story, covering the period from the first quarter of the 19th century until about 1900. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
