Abstract:This special issue of the 'Journal of Eastern African Studies' brings together 11 articles exploring differing aspects of Ethiopia's political experience since 1991. The papers fall into four subject categories, addressing the new foundational formula of 'ethnic federalism' cum 'revolutionary democracy' advocated by the post-1991 EPRDF (Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front) government, and its impact on collective identities and inter-group relations; electoral and opposition politics in the context of a dominant party-State; various related societal changes regarding the role and place of religious communities, the independent press and local-level politics; and Ethiopia's international positioning. Contributors: Jon Abbink, Fekadu Adugna, Jean-Nicolas Bach, Rony Emmenegger, Dereje Feyissa, Assefa Fiseha, Merera Gudina, Tobias Hagmann, Jörg Haustein, Asnake Kefale, Sibilo Keno, Terje Østebø, Nicole Stremlau, and Sarah Vaughan.
