Abstract: | The much-anticipated 2010 presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire was expected to mark an important milestone in the road toward restoring peace in the country. Unfortunately, the poll has ended up deepening the very rifts it was meant to heal. While the voting process in the recent run-off pitting President Laurent Gbagbo against the long-time opposition leader and former Prime Minister, Alassane Ouattara, was considered by observers to be largely free and fair, the events around and following the announcement of the final results have been characterized by serious tensions and some incidents of violence. Ethnicity and the north-south divide have played a crucial role in politics in Côte d'Ivoire and the post-election crisis has pushed the country to the brink of renewed civil war. Despite consensus among various regional and international actors on the victory of Ouattara in the run-off, the situation did not move any closer to resolution. This invited a flurry of diplomatic activity with ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) threatening to use military force to remove Gbagbo from power. Notes, ref., sum. (p. VII).
