Abstract:This article reviews the contribution of Guy Butler (1918-2001) to South African literature and cultural life over more than half a century. Concentrating on Butler's poetry, the paper argues that despite Butler's high-profile and at times controversial public role in the promotion of what he regarded as the humane and liberal values associated with his English heritage, the poetry reveals a deeply unquiet, private, and questing spirit seeking illumination and fulfilment as much in confessional verse as in religious certitude.
