Abstract: | Tanzania's first leader, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, was an ardent and militant African nationalist and an equally convinced and persuasive pan-Africanist. He was no doubt a man of great principle, but he was also a politician at the pinnacle of State power and as such, at times pragmatism overshadowed his avowed principles. He was a great thinker and stood intellectually head and shoulders above most of his political contemporaries. The present paper reconsiders Nyerere's political and intellectual contribution to Tanzania's political development. A conceptual framework in which a number of conceptual categories and ideological constructs are deployed, namely imperialism, State, nationalism, pan-Africanism, and ethnicity, organizes the discussion of Nyerere's thought. The paper schematically identifies some of the decisive or critical moments both in Nyerere's thought and in the historical events in Tanzania. Bibliogr., notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
