Abstract: | This paper traces the development of the South African government's postapartheid approach to African peace and stability, including the evolution of its policy on peacekeeping. It then explores the challenges and opportunities facing South Africa as a member of the United Nations Security Council and African Union Peace and Security Council. It offers an analysis of the sustainability of South Africa's current and future peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peace building efforts on the continent and concludes that it needs to further develop, implement, and manage an integrated and long-term foreign and security policy to the benefit of the country and the continent.
