Abstract:This study deals with gender and access to resources among the Haya, a fishing people on the Lake Victoria landing sites in Tanzania. In particular, the study is about Haya women accessing financial resources from men and men letting financial resources go to women, and how such dynamics are facilitating the spread of HIV/AIDS. Due to the dominance of the patriarchal system on the landing sites and islands of Lake Victoria, women are economically disadvantaged. A transformative paradigm is proposed for holistically dealing with HIV/AIDS, departing from the livelihood promotion processes of the people. [ASC Leiden abstract]
