Abstract:This paper argues that environmental degradation as we know it today is a consequence of the discourse of modernity. It starts with a re-appraisal of the discourse on environmental degradation. Next, it discusses the environmental degradation question as an anthropocentric issue, seen from the perspectives of 1) unequal interactions between humans and humans, and between humans and other species; 2) expansion of agricultural techniques; 3) Western expansionism; and 4) human self-actualization in capitalism and Marxism. Finally, it outlines the relationship between modernity and environmental degradation. [ASC Leiden abstract]
