Abstract: | Over the last decade the AU has deployed three peace operations: in Burundi (AMIB), Darfur (AMIS) and Somalia (AMISOM). In each of these cases, it made a significant contribution to stabilizing the situation. The models used to finance and support AU peace operations have been different in each of the three AU operations to date. At a seminar convened in Uppsala, Sweden, on 15 and 16 December 2011, AU, EU and UN officials closely involved in these operations were gathered together with a view to comparing experiences with the different support models that have been used to date in Sudan and Somalia. The aim of the seminar was to identify lessons from these experiences and to generate policy-relevant knowledge that can improve the way the AU and its partners manage their relationship, including the support aspect, in future. This report consists of some of the papers presented at the seminar, as well as general commentary and observations.
