Abstract: | This paper is based on archaeological research on the settlement history of the Shitire, a Tiv group in Nigeria's Benue Valley. The research was carried out between 1990 and 2006 on Dikpo hilltop, in the Katsina Ala area, where a survey was undertaken of the hill's abandoned settlements, in order to identify the original inhabitants and understand their culture at the time of their occupation of the hill, which was probably between the 15th and 16th centuries. The archaeological material as well as the oral traditions of present-day inhabitants of the area show that the Shitire people were the original inhabitants of Dikpo hill. Bibliogr., sum.
