Abstract: | Dances have always played a very important role in the life and culture of Malawians. They mark both joyful events and difficult moments in the life of the village and of the family. This DVD presents a selection of the most important and famous dances of the main ethnical groups present in Malawi. Many of these dances are still used in weddings, initiation rites, funerals and the enthronement of chiefs. Some might have been forgotten. All of them are a wonderful example of how creative Malawians are and how rich and precious their culture is. Dances of the Chewa: Chisamba, Kazukuta, Gule Wamkulu. Dances of the Ngoni: Ligubo, Ngoma, Uyeni, Ingoma. Dance of the Matengo: Mkwhendo. Dances of the Yao: Sikiri, Beni, Manganje. Dances common to all ethnic groups: Chimtali, Malipenga, Machipo, Henga.
