Abstract:Using three nationally representative surveys from The Gambia from 1992, 1998 and 2003, the authors estimate the private rates of returns to education in the country. To obtain consistent estimates, they exploit exogenous variation in school availability at the district level at the time current wage earners were born. The results show that the private rates of returns to education for individuals in the wage sector are quite high, although heterogeneous across regions of the country. The high rates of returns are robust to alternate formulations. App., bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. [Journal abstract]
