Abstract:In the community development discourse little attention has been paid to the contribution of women to society. In an attempt to fill this gap, the present article examines the role of Christian women's organizations in Nigeria. It first gives an overview of Christian women's organizations and groups and their characteristics, as well as their role in the development of the Church. Next, it examines the impact of Christian women's groups in society, notably in education, health care, and philanthropic activities such as prison visitation. The article concludes that although these organizations have a tremendous impact on society, much more can be done in their pursuit of a holistic ministry. Notes, ref., sum. [ASC Leiden abstract]
