Abstract:The papers in this volume were originally presented at a conference organized in July 2009 at the University of Malawi on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1959/1960 State of Emergency in Malawi (then Nyasaland). The papers are grouped into four parts: 1. Local studies (chapters by Owen J.M. Kalinga, Hendrina Kachapila Mazizwa, Wapulumuka O. Mulwafu, Kings M. Phiri, Annie F. Chiponda, and Jack T. Thompson); 2. Colonial violence and African responses (chapters by Phillip Murphy, John McCracken, Joey Power, and Megan Vaughan); 3.
