| Abstract: | Six short documentaries dealing with a variety of topics ranging from traditional music to art in public spaces, to youth culture. 'The Rabbaba man': the artist and craftsman Muhammad Modier 'Haraka' lives in Ombadda in the western outskirts of the city of Omdurman. For over twenty years the people of this impoverised and overpopulated neighbourhood have watched him riding his bicycle to the local markets. There he performs traditional songs from all over Sudan at the request of his customers and sells his colourful 'rabbabas' (traditional string instruments). His performances play an essental role within the social life of his neighbourhood. - 'Sittana': Sittana, a 83-year-old Sudanese female artist, has always lived an unconventional life for a woman of her generation. Sittana tells us about her life: growing up in the old city of Omdurman, Sudan's former capital; her father's influence on her, the moments when she was close to giving up but managed to get back to her special way of life. - 'Orange tint': this short takes a look at some aspects of daily life for young Sudanese urban women that are largely hidden from public view. The films shows us how a group of young Sudanese women with unconventional opinions spend their days in Khartoum - between moments of leisure and harmony and heated discussions about various topics. We gain an insight into their concerns and the things they talk about on a typical 'girls day out'. - 'In search of hip hop': on stage they are Mojo, DZA the Dissenter, MC Mo, the BiB and LUAL. Who are these Sudanese artists at the centre of an emerging hip hop scene in Khartoum? Why is rap a means of expression for young Sudanese people? Who are their audience? We see them at work in the recording studio and performing live - both in the city and at a major hip hop event, the 'Sudan Boom Box'. - 'Diversity': 'Sudan Unite' is a group of concerned artists, musicians, theatre people and film makers promoting the idea of a unified Sudan via art happenings in public spaces. By organising cultural festivals they emphasize that cultural diversity is the core issue in promoting unity between the South and the North of Sudan. - 'Rough cut': the aim of the documentary film workshop organized by the Goethe Institut in Khartoum was to encourage young Sudanese people to satisfy their interest in filmmaking and help them obtain basic cinematographic skills. This documentary observes the experiences of the workshop's participants - from coming up with an initial idea to challenges and unexpected hurdles they encountered while working on their projects.
