Abstract:Are the promises of the current wave of democratization in the West African subregion being met? Who are the contending forces in the drive to preserve or consolidate the democracy project in the subregion? Which forces are eager to take the subregion back to its authoritarian past? What is the role of ECOWAS in this process? And what are the implications of the struggle over democracy for the character of the State, politics and development trajectories? These are some of the questions addressed in this issue of African Renaissance. Contributions: Democracy and its discontents in West Africa (Jideofor Adibe); Democratic theory and democratic rupture: resource curse and aid dependency perspectives on Africa (Francisco Kofi Olympio); ECOWAS and democratic consolidation in West Africa: praetorian resurgence as a failure of democratic process (Bamidele A. Ojo); ECOWAS and democratic reversals in West Africa (Augustine C. Ohanwe); Transition to democracy: the challenges and prospects of military intervention in the democratization of West African States (Chigozie Enwere); The ECOWAS protocol, emerging military threats and the relapse of democracy in West Africa: lessons from Cote d'Ivoire and Niger Republic (A. Modibbo Salau, Canice E. Erunke, Ruth Caleb Luka); Military interventions in French West Africa and Economic Community of West African States (Ezeibe Christian Chukwuebuka); ECOWAS and the lessons from the recent coup in Mali (Jideofor Adibe).
