Abstract:The broad concept of this book, the product of the Ijaw History Project, is to provide a global history of the Ijo (or Izon or Ijaw) people from their homeland in the Niger Delta through their interactions with other nationalities across Nigeria, and their dispersal and migrations, forced and voluntary, through West and Central Africa, and to Europe, the Americas and the Carribean. The book provides an overview of issues concerning the environment of the Niger Delta and an analysis of the Ijo population, language, culture, resources, (early) history, and linkage to the rest of Nigeria and the world. It presents a synopsis of the Ijo in the past and their situation in the present. The concluding chapter addresses the question of whether the Ijo struggle for identity has succeeded or failed to bear fruit. 49 authors contributed to the volume, amongst others: C. Budonyefa Agbegha, Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa, John Pepper Clark, Nkparom Claude Ejituwu, John H. Enemugwem, Tekena Nitonye Tamuno and Ruth Kay Williamson. [ASC Leiden abstract]
