Abstract:People have become increasingly dependent on digital information and the Internet as a medium for gaining and exchanging information. There is growing evidence in Uganda of successful digitalization projects to develop digital resources. The records at the Uganda Christian University archives have been digitized and made available in both digital and microfilm formats. Through digitalization, the institution is able to provide access to text, photographs, manuscripts, audio, and moving image materials. It also allows for the preservation of rare, fragile and unique materials. Thus, collections can be made accessible world-wide and so also raises the profile of the institution. However, the authors also focusses on the challenges involving access, inadequate funding, attitudes, and more importantly lack of skilled personnel and equipment. The paper concludes with the suggestion that institutions of learning in Uganda could include training in digitalization and technical skills in their curricula; information is after all an important resource for any society to develop.
