Abstract: | The Hoba Meteorite was discoverd in 1920 on the farm 'Hoba West', not far from Grootfontein (Namibia), by the farm owner Jacobus Hermanus Brits. The main mass is estimated at more than 60 tons making it the largest known meteorite in the world. In 1955 the meteorite was declared a National Monument. In 1985 Rössing Uranium Ltd. made funds available to surround the meteorite with a stone amphitheatre and transform it into a touristic site. This article depicts the history of the Hoba Meteorite. It is divided into three chapters (Part 1: Nature and discovery; part 2: The news spreads ...; part 3: Known and loved by all ... ). Each chapter includes a bibliography. The article was originally published in the Monthly Notes of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (MNASSA, 2008, vol. 67, pp. 85-94, 166-174 and 202-211). App., bibliogr.
