Abstract: | This book is a collection of peer-reviewed papers contributed at the international conference 'Intellectual leadership development for Africa's advancement' on the occasion of the launch of the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) of the University of South Africa that took place in Pretoria in October 2010. It outlines perspectives of African scholars on the debate on leadership and the articulation of the life of the mind in Africa's socio-economic, political and cultural life from the time of independence to date. In four sections the contributions deal with: 1. alternative leadership paradigms for Africa's advancement and the 'thin line' separating management studies from leadership studies; 2. the linkages between globalization and public ethics, posing philosophical questions about conscience and consciousness and interrogating the credibility deficits in the global governance of trade; 3. the overall issues of language, liberation, the significance of multidisciplinary approaches in the analysis of the African continent, appropriate indigenous paradigms for promoting the African renaissance as well as a series of debates on the meaning and prospects of regional integration and pan-Africanism; and 4. scientific, technological and cultural dimensions of African development.
