Abstract: | The origin of community development is the origin of humankind and collective activity. However, the origin and purpose of community development as a profession vary in different parts of the world. In an attempt to professionalize and better understand community development for the democratic context of South Africa, this article presents an overview of the following: a historical perspective of community development in the African and South African context; conceptualization of community development generally and conceptual issues specifically for South Africa; the integrated relationship between community development and other human service professions; community development at the higher education level; and the need to professionalize community development. The conclusion highlights the importance of educating, preparing and supporting a new generation of ethical community development professionals for democratic South Africa and the critical role of a professional body for community development in this regard.
