Abstract: | The Joint Universities committee of Social work (JUC) now the association of South African Social Work Education Institutions (ASASWEI) hosts annual conferences with themes related to the training, and practice of social workers in Southern Africa. The 2001 conference held in Gaborone, Botswana, deliberated issues associated with the indigenization of social work in an African context. The subthemes included conceptualizing the indigenous, identifying specific, relevant practice, contextualizing knowledge and service delivery in relation to HIV and AIDS, indigenizing teaching methods, promoting research through the discovery of local knowledge, and prospects and problems in the sphere of indigenization. Papers addressed relevant issues surrounding theoretical foundations, traditional healing and HIV/ AIDS, African style residential hospice care, contextualized teaching materials, collaboration between schools of social work and relevant social systems, and the indigenization of research. This book comprises a selection of papers presented at the conference.
