Abstract:This paper examines the way the 50th anniversary of Cameroon's independence was celebrated from the point of view of performances around the theme of unity that came to dominate the celebrations. It focuses on the symbols (dates, emblems), activities and interpretation of events during the independence jubilee celebrations while analyzing the significance of the failed promise of reunification celebrations in 2011, the attempt by Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC) activists to stage a celebration in their own way on 1st October 2011 and the reaction from regional government officials.
