Abstract: | Records management is crucial to all organizations including universities. Unless records are managed efficiently, it is not possible to conduct business effectively, and to account for what has happened in the past or to make good decisions about the future. This article reports on the University of Namibia (UNAM) records management project, which takes as point of departure that records need to be systematically and continuously managed throughout their life-cycle in an integrated manner. The project aims at organizing record-keeping at the university in accordance with international archival standards. It was found that the most important single factor determining the success of a records management programme was the active support of senior management. Sound policies, well-crafted guidelinesand a very practical implementation plan are crucial as well. [ASC Leiden abstract] |
