Abstract:The special issue emerges from the collective endeavours of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council and Department for International Development (and also part funded by the British Academy - Association of Commonwealth Universities) that ran throughout 2010-2013. The two primary goals of the research were to respond to two research questions. First, how are the lived experiences of drinking understood and taken up in the policy-making process in South Africa? And second, how, why and where do the poor drink and under what conditions do these practices become 'problematic'? Contributions: Alcohol, poverty and the South African city (Clare Herrick, Susan Parnell); Researching sensitive topics in African cities: reflections on alcohol research in Cape Town (Mary Lawhon, Clare Herrick, Shari Daya); Shebeens as spaces and places of informality, enterprise, drinking and sociability (A.J.E. Charman, L.M. Petersen, T. Govender); On alcohol, transport and poverty in Cape Town (Gordon Pirie); Discourses of alcohol: reflections on key issues influencing the regulation of shebeens in Cape Town (Warren Smit); Stakeholder narratives on alcohol governance in the Western Cape: the socio-spatial 'nuisance' of drink (Clare Herrick); Plural regulation of shebeens (informal drinking places) (Laura Drivdal, Mary Lawhon).
