Abstract:These two volumes contain papers presented at the international conference of Ethiopian studies organized in 2012 in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, around the general theme of 'movement'. The papers represent a variety of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. The first volume consists mostly of historical and ethno-historical studies based on different types of sources: textual sources such as manuscripts, archival materials and newspapers, but also oral traditions, heritage items, photographs, maps, coins, music, etc. After an introductory chapter by the editors, the first volume opens with two keynote addresses. The first, 'The dynamics of political succession in Ethiopian history', by Bahru Zewde, looks at political succession from the medieval period to the present time. The second, entitled 'About Ethiopian music(s) and their heritage', by Francis Falceto, argues that considering expressions of popular Ethiopian music as cultural heritage would contribute to a better recognition of ordinary voices. And there are many other titles in the first volume.
