Abstract: | Film registration of a gritty prison drama. The play takes place in an unspecified South African prison during an immanent gang war within its walls and relies heavily on prison gang histories, which are often referred to as mythologies. They stole a bull from the white man Rabie. The bull's name was Rooiland. They slaughtered Rooiland for a great feast. They drank from the horns: Kilikijan the blood, Nongoloza the gall. They made a print of the law on the hide. On Rooiland's. That's the law. And that law survived, even when heaven and earth split - when Kilikijan smashed the stone tablets and the 27's walked one path and the 28's another. A prison cell. Four prisoners. A fluid, inchoate world. A ritual of blood and sacrifice. Everyday prison violence inflates to a conflict over universal issues. [Abstract reproduced from dvd-video] |
