| Abstract: | Lagos, Nigeria's economic capital, has undergone exponential growth over the past few decades. Its population has more than quintupled in fifty years. The population growth has had a dramatic impact not just on the Lagos environment but also on the municipal infrastructure. This article analyses the urban renewal and resettlement policies of subsequent Lagos governments. The author argues that future governments of Lagos should embark on environmental and social renewal, and should adopt an urban renewal strategy that is 'people first', district based, and participatory.
