| Abstract: | This article examines the role of the Nigerian armed forces in the conduct of elections. There has been a lot of controversy around this issue in Nigeria. Whilst some believe that the military should not be involved at all in the conduct of elections, others argue that they could play a limited role in ensuring the safety and sanctity of elections. The authors examine the various arguments of these competing schools of thought. The article concludes by suggesting that whilst the armed forces should be confined to their traditional role of defending the territorial integrity, it has become imperative that they be involved in ensuring the security of voters and election materials in view of the increasingly violent nature of elections.
