Abstract: | The long period of military rule in Nigeria was characterized by a lack of respect for the human rights of citizens. The reinstatement of democracy in 1999 was viewed as a milestone in Nigeria's stride towards respect for human rights. Unfortunately, democracy as it is practiced in Nigeria has not improved respect for human rights. This brings forward the question: why has human rights violation persisted in Nigeria in spite of democratic rule? This paper identifies three reasons why human rights violations persist in the fourth republic. Bibliogr., sum. [Journal abstract] |
