Abstract: | This essay reports on a two-week interactive theatre workshop held with students from the South West Gauteng College, Soweto. The workshop examined the issue of ethical leadership, based on annotations in a copy of William Shakespeare's 'Complete Works' made by South African leaders during their imprisonment on Robben Island in the time of Apartheid. The annotations express the ideological or philosophical stance of these leading figures. The essay reflects on the annotations in the light of the current socio-political situation in South Africa and reports on the performance of the monologues with which the workshop concluded.
