Abstract: | This photographic essay emerges out of Master's fieldwork being conducted at the University of Cape Town. It concerns the mutual arrangement between a boxing club and a church group to share a space for their respective pursuits. Depending on one's point of view, the photographs depict minor characters in a subplot of greater South Africa, or the central protagonists in an agentive drama of their own making. The author documents the two overlapping worlds of boxing and religion, but these photos are also intended to gesture towards questions of space and place making, precarity, resistance and the necessity of compromise.
