| Abstract: | In research on religion in Africa, the study of Christianity and Islam is thriving, however, these fields exist more or less independently from each other. The editors of this special issue argue that the long history of encounters between Muslims and Christians calls for an encompassing conceptual framework that is devoted to drawing out similarities, differences and entanglements. The central aim of this special issue is to explore the possibilities and impossibilities of a comparative study of Christianity and Islam. The firts part of the issue is based on the panel 'Studying Islam and Christianity in Africa: comparisons and interactions', convened the Fifth European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) in Lisbon in 2013. An article on the trial of Thomas Kwoyelo of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), the first domestic war crimes case in Uganda, is also included.
